Among Rutherford County residents, it has been called “one of the most hidden stories of history.” This mystery won’t be found in history books, but in oral stories that have been passed down for generations. Sure, there are embellishments here and there; maybe even a discrepancy or two, but the basic story stays the same: Abraham Lincoln, arguably one of the most popular presidents in U.S. history, was not born in a Kentucky log cabin, as is traditionally believed, but in a log plantation home in a place called Puzzle Creek, Rutherford County, North Carolina.
The stories were compelling enough that books discussing the possibility began to be published in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 2008, with the help of local supporters, the Bostic Lincoln Center opened in a quaint 1928 train depot in downtown Bostic. Its mission, the museum states, is to “preserve the generational lore of the area.”
